I bought Mario Kart for the Wii the other night and it is a blast to play.  It is not a hard game to pick up, so I recommend it to anyone even if you are not video game savvy because it is not hard to play.  The game comes with a wheel that you simply pop your Wii remote in to and you use the wheel to steer your kart.  I have a real blast playing it, there are some hard boards but for the most part it is a family friendly game.  We picked up an extra wheel so the hubby and I can play together.  We were playing the vs mode where you have to pop the balloons, it was great.
